Two permissions and an invite code, then you can turn anything on your screen into flashcards.
1
Allow Accessibility (recommended)
Lets Arcuate read the front window's name so cards cite the document and page you captured from. The shortcuts work without it. macOS lists Arcuate in the Accessibility pane; turn it on there.
2
Allow Screen Recording
Needed to capture the region you drag. Turn on Arcuate in the Screen Recording pane. macOS may ask you to quit and reopen Arcuate afterwards.
3
Enter your invite code
Paste the code you were given. It unlocks a free allowance of captures; the AI runs on Arcuate's server, nothing else to set up.

Try it
Open anything you study from, press ⌃⌥S, drag around a paragraph, and press Enter. ⌃⌥T makes a card from typed or pasted text. Everything else is in the ◎ menu.
